Michael Bambang Hartono (2 October 1939 – 19 March 2026) was one of Indonesia’s most prominent business leaders and a distinguished alumnus of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP). He studied at the Faculty of Economics at UNDIP, beginning in 1959, before returning to Kudus to help manage his family’s business following the passing of his father in 1963.

Together with his younger brother, Robert Budi Hartono, Michael played a pivotal role in transforming Djarum from a family-owned kretek cigarette manufacturer into one of Indonesia’s leading business groups. Under their leadership, the group diversified into several sectors, including banking, electronics, property, plantations, and digital businesses. Its business interests include Bank Central Asia (BCA), one of Indonesia’s largest private banks, and Polytron, a prominent Indonesian electronics brand.

Beyond his business achievements, Michael Bambang Hartono was an accomplished bridge player and a strong supporter of the sport’s development in Indonesia. At the age of 78, he represented Indonesia at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and won a bronze medal in the supermixed team bridge event, demonstrating his dedication, strategic thinking, and lifelong commitment to excellence.

Michael Bambang Hartono’s legacy reflects entrepreneurial resilience, strategic leadership, and the capacity to build sustainable business institutions across generations. As an alumnus of Universitas Diponegoro, his life and achievements represent an important part of UNDIP’s alumni legacy and exemplify the potential of its graduates to make a lasting impact on Indonesia’s economy and international business landscape.
