Dr. Aretha Aprilia is the Head of Nature, Climate and Energy (NCE) unit at the UNDP Indonesia. She is leading the largest unit of UNDP Indonesia, which consists of the major share of the overall delivery of the Country Office. Her main role is to oversee nearly 55 ongoing projects and pipelines.

Dr. Aretha Aprilia completed her undergraduate studies in Engineering (B.Eng.) at Universitas Diponegoro, graduating around 2002. She then pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree at Wageningen University. Dr. Aretha earned her doctoral degree from Kyoto University, Japan, in the field of Energy Science, with a research focus on waste-to-energy management.

She formerly worked at the US engineering consulting firm CDM Smith based in Jakarta. She worked on a variety of roles, ranging from leading/supporting resource mobilization (for Nepal, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Jordan, Indonesia) to implementing waste management projects funded by German organizations KfW and GIZ. She was the Portfolio Lead of the off-grid renewable energy (‘Green Prosperity’) project funded by the US government with a total value of US$ 30 million.

She previously served as the Deputy Team Leader for the Australia-Indonesia Infrastructure Partnership (KIAT) project on the ‘Upgrade of Waste Collection and Transportation System in DKI Jakarta’. She has also worked as the Waste/Environmental Expert on the German KfW funded project on advanced solid waste management.

Prior to that, she was the Programme Specialist at the UN Environment Programme in Bangkok. Upon her resignation to pursue a PhD programme in Japan, the UNEP Regional Director awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for “Outstanding Performance”. Earlier in her career, she was an intern at the UN Environment Programme in Paris & Bangkok.

In 2017 she received two international awards, namely the ‘Green Talents 2017’ award from the German Ministry of Education and Research in Berlin, Germany and the “50 Most Impactful Green Leaders (Global listing)” award presented in Mumbai, India. In 2011, she was selected as Climate Change Professional Fellow by the US Department of State to pursue the program in New York & Washington DC.

Further back in 2013, she was the ‘Most Powerful Woman’ nominee by Her World magazine and received the ‘Young Professional Caring Award’ by Martha Tilaar group. In 2016, she was selected as one of the “50 Most Inspiring Women”, whose photo was featured in Central Park mall. During her college years, she was selected as the 1st Winner of ‘Miss Novotel Indonesia’ to promote Indonesian tourism in Paris, and the 1st runner up of ‘Puteri (Miss) Indonesia’ at Central Java provincial level.
