Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono is a medical doctor and professor specializing in neurosurgery. He is the first physician to receive a record from the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) and is also recorded as the first and only doctor in Indonesia to have successfully performed brainstem surgery on a patient.
Eka was born on 27 July 1958 in Klaten, Central Java, under his birth name Tjioe Tjay Kian, into a modest family. Much of his education from elementary school through medical school—was supported by his uncle. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1983 at Universitas Diponegoro, after which Prof. Dr. dr. Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono, Sp.BS pursued his Neurosurgery specialization at Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung. He is a member of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI).
Serving as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), he was also awarded the title of Professor by both the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan. This appointment was formalized through Decree of the Minister of National Education No. 11791/A4.5/KP/2010, dated 1 February 2010. The professorial conferment was officiated by UPH Rector Jonathan Parapak and witnessed by the President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and Harvard Medical School professor, Peter Black, at The Grand Chapel UPH, Lippo Village, Tangerang.
Prof. Eka’s historic achievement in brain surgery began on 20 February 2001, when he successfully operated on the brainstem (pons) of an underprivileged patient named Ardiansyah, a fisherman from Merak, Banten, who had been diagnosed with a ruptured cavernoma tumor in the brainstem. Motivated by compassion, Dr. Eka undertook the extremely high-risk procedure where the outcomes could have been death or paralysis at a time when no other doctor dared to attempt such surgery. In addition to Ardiansyah, he also successfully performed brain surgery on another patient, Jumiati, at Siloam Hospital, Tangerang, Banten. These achievements are recorded in world medical history, recognizing Dr. Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono as the first neurosurgeon in the world to perform brainstem surgery.
Beyond educating future physicians at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan, he has also conducted various research projects. Among them is research on Alzheimer’s disease, carried out in collaboration with Prof. Ralph Nigel Martins, aimed at finding effective treatment approaches. Currently, Prof. Eka practices as a neurosurgeon at Siloam Lippo Village Hospital, Tangerang.
