Suryo Utomo, who has now served as Director General of Taxes since November 2019, earned a Bachelor of Economics degree at Diponegoro University in 1992. Suryo Utomo has had a long career journey at the Directorate General of Taxes. After graduating from the Faculty of Economics, Diponegoro University, he continued his education in the Master of Business Taxation program at the University of Southern California, United States (1998), and the Doctor of Philosophy in Taxation program from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. His career began as an executor at the Ministry of Finance in 1993 until now as the Director General of Taxes.

As the Director General of Taxes, Suryo faced major challenges, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic hit a few months after he took office. He implemented an adaptive strategy to maintain state revenue by expanding the tax base and conducting regional supervision, even though pandemic conditions limited economic activity. Under his leadership, the tax sector is geared towards supporting people’s welfare and maintaining economic stability, especially in sectors that survived during the pandemic, such as food, medicine, and communications. His strategic decisions are based on his education and deep experience in taxation, making him a formidable leader in difficult times.

According to his story, when he registered to study at Undip, he enrolled in Undip Science and Social Sciences because he majored in Science in high school. But what was accepted was even the social studies, the next year I registered again and was accepted into Chemical Engineering. After he thought carefully with pity for his parents, he finally continued to study Accounting at the Faculty of Economics, Diponegoro University. Graduated after 6 years, because during college I still often feel “in between”, continue to study or not. During that time, he also struggled to overcome his dislike of the scientific field he was pursuing at that time.
