Umi Azizah (born in Bojong, Tegal, 1960; age 65 years) is the Regent of Tegal Regency who has served since January 8, 2019. Umi is the second daughter of KH. Zainal Arifin (Founder and Caretaker of the Nurul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School) and Nyai Hj. Masyitoh. Since she was young, Umi was educated in a religious environment. When continuing her education to secondary education, her parents sent her to the Madrasah Aliyah (MA) of the Mambaul Ma’arif Denanyar Jombang Islamic Boarding School under the care of KH. Bisri Samsyuri (Gus Dur’s grandfather). After completing MA, Umi Azizah continued her education at Diponegoro University in the Department of Government, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), graduating in 1985 as the best graduate of FISIP. In the social field, Umi Azizah began her career by dedicating herself to Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama as chair for two terms (1987-1992 and 1992-1997).
When the National Awakening Party (PKB) was first established, she was actively involved as a campaigner (jurkam). She rejected offers to actively occupy structural positions in the party or become a legislative candidate because she still wanted to serve and fight for the community without having to be involved in political activities. But in 2013 after being asked by the kyai of Tegal Regency to accompany Ki Enthus Susmono to advance in the Tegal Regency Regent and Deputy Regent Election for the 2013-2018 period and was successfully elected.
In the 2018 Tegal Regency Pilkada, this incumbent pair again ran for the 2018-2023 period. However, Enthus Susmono died in May 2018. Anticipating this sudden condition, Umi, who originally wanted to run again as a candidate for deputy regent, finally ran as a candidate for regent paired with Sabilillah Ardie and won the simultaneous Pilkada contest on June 27, 2018.
