Puan Maharani Nakshatra Kusyala Devi (born September 6, 1973) is a politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) who currently serves as the Speaker of the People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI Speaker) for the 2024–2029 period. Puan is the first woman and the third youngest person, after Achmad Sjaichu and I Gusti Gde Subamia, to have served as the permanent Speaker of the DPR; she was 46 years old when she was inaugurated. In fact, Puan is also recorded as the first Speaker of the DPR after the Reformation who successfully served for two consecutive terms (2019-2024 and 2024-2029).
Puan lives a relatively normal and smooth life, despite being the granddaughter of the first president Soekarno. This happened until she was in junior high school (SMP), when her mother Megawati became active again in Indonesian politics during the New Order. She graduated from Perguruan Cikini Senior High School in 1991, and she entered the University of Indonesia in 1991 to study mass communications. She graduated in 1997. On 14 February 2020, Puan was awarded an honorary Doctorate Honoris Causa from Diponegoro University, a two-year process to obtain the degree.
Following the April 2019 Indonesian General Election, in which preliminary results showed the PDIP winning the most votes, Puan was mentioned as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 2019–2024 period,[32] becoming the first female speaker of the council. She has also indicated that she may run for the presidency in 2024. Individually, she won 404,034 votes for her ticket to the council, the most of any legislative candidate in the country. She was appointed Speaker on 1 October 2019, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
